The National Football League (NFL) hall of fame is known as the Professional Football Hall of Fame.  The hall of fame is located in Canton, Ohio.  It was established on September 7, 1963 with seventeen inductees.  The amazing thing about the football hall of fame is Billy Shaw.  Billy Shaw is the only person who was inducted and never played a piece of professional ball in the NFL.  His entire career was in the American football league.  Everyone else inducted into the hall of fame has played football for the national league.  The reason that the building was built in Canton, Ohio was because of the American Professional Football Association was first founded in Canton.  The association was later renamed the NFL.

Who selects the candidates?  Well a 39-member committee is made up of sportswriters that are known as the Board of Selectors.  Well they all do not nominate someone.  To nominate a player, coach or team executive, you must be on the Seniors Committee.  The seniors committee consists of nine people.  To be selected, a candidate must be supported by at least 80% of the board.  Only 3-6 inductees must be nominated.  The only rule is that a player must be retired for at least five years or a coach can simply be retired.  As for team executives, they are nominated at any time during their rein or retirement.  It is not specified for them. The inductees are not inducted as part of a team.  They are not pictured in a uniform, but they are sculpted to no reference of a team.

As for the hall of fame, they have over dozens of players, coaches, and executives already inducted.  They meet every year on the first day before the super bowl.  Their decision is announced and each inductor gets the glory of knowing they are piece of NFL history.  Being inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame is a great honor to any player, coach, or executive.  It is open to the public like many other halls of fame so fans can have a moment to honor each inductee.  Canton, Ohio is the birthplace of the NFL is very important to all fans of football and the fans of the organization.
